Ballantine's, is a Scotch whisky of the type blended. The word "blended" suggests to us that Ballantine's is a blend, a special type of alcohol, which is whiskey itself. The company responsible for this well-liked high-alcohol product in our country is the brand George Ballantine & Son Ltd.

Ballantine's whisky, as mentioned above, is a blend of alcohol. What does it consist of and what exactly is its specificity? What makes this brand particularly distinctive among other types of alcohol and product sold, under the name of whisky? The brand of Scotch whisky type blended, was legally reserved by George Ballantine, exactly in 1827. We would ask you, when reading the article, to keep this historical fact mainly in mind in the rest of the article, because, in our opinion, it has very significant meanings, for the mystery of Ballantine's whisky.  


Whisky, is produced on the basis of barley. This is a type of grain that we can also find in Poland. Barley, with its appearance, somewhat resembles ordinary tall grass that grows in the field. At the end of this cereal, there is the so-called ear, that is, the seeds collected in the form of a single, wrinkled husk. At least several species of barley can be distinguished, viz:

  • two-row barley,
  • Rye,
  • fawning,
  • or fringe.

Ballantine's is made from two varieties of whiskey: single malt and the one that remains a great, and to this day hidden, secret of the brand. Single malt, is an alcohol whose peculiarity lies mainly in the fact that it is obtained as a result of the distillation process. The second major characteristic single malt, is that it is extracted from a single type of malt. Malt, as a reminder, is nothing more than ripe and already dried cereal grains, which, in addition to being used for the production of high alcohol, also perform many other important functions related to the food industry. Cereals are used, for example, to produce bread, which, as you know, is baked using flour.  


Ballantine's, can boast of having created some forty, different varieties of Scotch malt and grain whisky. The founder of Ballantine's, was George Ballantine. Distribution of the whisky it produces, however, is handled by a company called Pernod Ricard, which has its headquarters in Dumbarton.

George Ballantine, as one of the pioneers and proponents of creating malt whisky on a base containing single malt, began efforts in a direction that, before long, led the Ballantine's brand to the point where the whisky it produced could be sold in stores, located in such places in Scotland as Speyside, the Highlands and Islay and the Lowlands. Quickly these towns, became associated with certain types of blended whisky, a type of blended. However, this does not mean that Ballantine's itself was produced in them.  

That's why Ballantine's whisky is one and single malt, Is it also produced in Speyside? What made the Highlands of Scotland produce it legally as early as 1823, while the rest of the country, was under a sort of anti-prohibition law until the mid-19th century? From the encyclopedic sources available to us, it is clear that George Ballantine, only opened his first store in Edinburgh in 1827. The Speyside case, seems to be somewhat simpler. Nonetheless, it, too, may require a fair amount of thinking and valuable time-consuming reading. 


Speyside Single Malts, is actually a type of single malt Scotch whisky, but the Speyside region of Scotland itself is designated as one of the four, major locations where George Ballantine's opened its first stores engaged in the legal sale of blended whisky liquor blended. This was in 1827, when George Ballantine & Son Ltd. succeeded in legalizing the company it ran. Islay, is an island that is part of the Inner Hebrides, located west of the island of Jura. It is the traditional production area for Scotch whisky, although it does not directly belong to Scotland, but is an area of territory throughout the Kingdom of Great Britain. Islay, is the third of the destinations of whisky produced by George Ballantine in the first half of the nineteenth century, which, as is well known, at that time offered alcohol supported only by ideas of its own production. Why, when whisky by George Ballantine, reached the Lowlands region, did the founder of this world-famous brand, decide to withdraw his business from this area of England and move it to Edinburgh, and then open his tenth store in the Scottish city of Glasgow?
